Being so close to the aircraft factories at Filton and Patchway made Kingswood vulnerable to ariel attack during WWII, indeed many bombs fell on Kingswood. Many men and women served in the armed forced and the land army. Cossham Hospital tower is said to have been a used as a landmark for German bomber pilots. As many Kingswood children recall, wartime was a time of opportunities to find treasures such as shrapnal and to beg American soldiers for chewing gum with the cry of 'Got any gum chum?'
